The growing importance of the Chinese economy is generating a huge demand for statistics on economic and social developments in China, but some analysts have challenged the official statistics produced by the Chinese National Statistical System.
The OECD carried out an analysis of China’s National Statistical System in the context of its Governance in China project. Moreover, the recently published Economic Survey of China 2005 offered new evidence about Chinese enterprises. At this event, Mr. Giovannini presented and discussed the methodological aspects of the OECD’s statistical work on China and discuss the strengths and weaknesses present in Chinese economic statistics.
Enrico Giovannini has served as the Director of the Statistics Directorate and Chief Statistician of the OECD since 2001. He is an economist and Full Professor of economic statistics at the University of Rome “Tor Vergata.” Under his leadership, in 2001 the OECD launched a new statistical strategy and reinforced its role in the international market of statistical information. He currently serves on several committees of the United Nations, European Union and other international organizations. Prior to joining the OECD, Mr. Giovannini was the Director for Economic Statistics at the Italian Statistical Institute (ISTAT.) Mr. Giovannini holds a degree in Economics from the University of Rome “La Sapienza.”
