Growth in GDP per capita has varied across OECD countries over the past couple decades partly for deep-seated, structural reasons. Two new OECD reports shed new light on the causes and cures: Going for Growth 2006 and "The Benefits of Liberalizing Product Markets and Reducing Barriers to International Trade and Investment in the OECD" . These reports focus on labor, product, and financial markets as well as the role of innovation in generating economic growth. By benchmarking economies' performance vis-à-vis best practices, the reports have policy recommendations for all OECD member countries. Estimates of the potential improvement in living standards that would result from the further opening of markets and increased competition are also provided.
Jean-Philippe Cotis is Chief Economist and Head of the Economics Department at the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). He was appointed to his current position in August 2002. Prior to joining the OECD, he was Chief Economist and Head of the Economics Department at the Ministry of Finance in France, starting in 1997. After two years at the International Monetary Fund, he returned to the Ministry of Finance in 1989, where he held positions in its Economics Department and as Advisor to the Minister. He was elected Chairman of the Economic Policy Committee of the European Union (2001-02). Mr. Cotis has been teaching economics in a variety of institutions, including the Paris I Sorbonne University, the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard and the Ecole Nationale d'Administration. From 1997 to 2002, Mr. Cotis was a standing member of the Prime Minister’s Council of Economic Advisors.
Kevin Hassett is the Director of the Economic Policy Studies Group and a Resident Scholar at the American Enterprise Institute. Before arriving at AEI, Dr. Hassett was a senior economist at the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System and associate professor of economics and finance at the Graduate School of Business of Columbia University. He received his Ph.D. in economics from the University of Pennsylvania.
