Illegal Migration: Movements and Policies

Presentation:
Georges Lemaitre, International Migration Specialist, OECD Directorate for Employment, Labor and Social Affairs

This event took place on Wednesday, February 15, 2006
8:30 AM Registration - 9.00-10.00 AM Presentation
Capitol Hill Club, Private Dining Room 3, 300 First Street, SE, Washington, DC 20003, (202) 484-4590

Irregular or illegal migration is a problem with which all OECD countries are confronted. Some have dealt with this by means of regularizations, others by increasing enforcement activities and expulsions and others by making entry more restrictive.

Mr. Lemaitre’s presentation will focus on the record of irregular migration across OECD countries, the conditions associated with its occurrence, the means that have been used to address the issue, and options for redirecting such flows into legal channels.

For data on international migration see the OECD database on immigrants and expatriates in OECD countries which is the first internationally comparable data set with detailed information on the foreign-born population for almost all member countries of the OECD.

Georges Lemaitre has been at the OECD since 1994 and is currently working in the international migration area, with particular emphasis on the labour market integration of immigrants, the comparability of international migration statistics and the management of migration flows. Prior to this, he managed the social statistics area at the OECD, including among others, international comparisons of education systems and the OECD international student assessment (PISA).  He arrived at the OECD from Statistics Canada, where his field of activity covered labour market surveys and analysis.
