Event Description:

John Martin and Georges Lemaitre will present highlights from the 2006 edition of the International Migration Outlook. For the first time, this publication presents harmonized data on international immigration to OECD countries, permitting valid comparisons across countries. The publication also includes information on migration categories, the origins of immigrants, the incidence of asylum seeking, the numbers of international students and the magnitude of unauthorized movements. The presentation contrast results for the United States with those for other G7 countries.

Biographies:

John P. Martin is Director for Employment, Labor and Social Affairs at the OECD, with responsibility for OECD work on health and international migration.  After studying Economics at University College Dublin, he worked as a research assistant at the Economic and Social Research Institute in Dublin.  During this period, he was also economics correspondent for The Sunday Independent.  Mr. Martin joined the OECD in 1977 and has held several posts in his current directorate and in the Economics Department.  He was the first editor of the OECD Employment Outlook from 1983 to 1986, and he also edited the OECD Economic Outlook in 1992-93.  He was a member of the Editorial Board of OECD Economic Studies for many years and is an associate editor of Labour Economics.  Mr. Martin did postgraduate studies at Nuffield College, Oxford and is a part-time Professor at the Institute of Political Studies (Sciences Po) in Paris.

Georges Lemaitre has been at the OECD since 1994 and is currently working in the international migration area, with particular emphasis on the labour market integration of immigrants, the comparability of international migration statistics and the management of migration flows. Prior to this, he managed the social statistics area at the OECD, including among others, international comparisons of education systems and the OECD international student assessment (PISA). He arrived at the OECD from Statistics Canada, where his field of activity covered labour market surveys and analysis.
