Event Description:
The OECD Factbook 2006 is the second edition of a comprehensive and dynamic new statistical annual from the OECD. The purpose of this publication is to provide an entry to a wide-range of statistical data, including international comparisons, context, forecasts, and key messages at a glance. More than 150 indicators cover a wide range of areas: economic trends; prices; agriculture; education; energy; the environment; foreign aid; health and quality of life; industry; information and communication; labor markets; taxation; trade and investment; public expenditure and debt; and R&D. Data are provided for all OECD member countries (including area totals) and for a few non-member economies. (Brazil, China, India, Russian Federation, and South Africa).
Many new indicators are covered in this edition, including information on “brain drain,” tsunami recovery aid, and leisure activities. This year, the special focus of the report is on economic globalization.
For each indicator there is a two-page spread that includes short introductory text; detailed definitions; comments on comparability; long-term trends assessment; a graph that provides the key message of the data at a glance; and a list of other references relevant to that indicator. Each indicator also has a data table with a StatLink, from which users of the online version will be able to choose a given table and be directed immediately to the underlying data in MS Excel™.

Mr. Giovannini will focus his remarks on the relative position of United States vis-à-vis other OECD countries, as well as the position of other “global players” who are not members of the OECD (Brazil, China, etc.). He will also present recent OECD initiatives on the measurement of wellbeing/progress and will highlight the main features of the second OECD World Forum on “Statistics, Knowledge and Policy”, to be held in Turkey in 2007.
