OECD Statistics on Measuring Globalisation Online Database - The Role of Multinationals in OECD Economies: Manufacturing and Services
Previously titled: Activities of Foreign Affiliates in OECD Countries
The need to assess the role and impact of direct investment not only in financial terms but also in the context of its impact on jobs, sales and trade has underlined the importance of having data indicative of the industrial activity of multinational firms.
The Measuring Globalisation database has been created to analyse the performance of foreign affiliates in OECD countries, and to compare them with that of all firms, particularly in the areas of production, employment, international trade and research. It draws attention to the potential benefits of hosting foreign firms for countries.
This electronic product complements the biennial publication Measuring Globalisation: the Role of Multinationals in OECD Economies by providing more complete historical data series than contained in that publication.
This year's edition includes for the first time data on the activity of affiliates of national firms abroad (outward investment) and also presents data on inward and outward investment for services (FATS).
As regards the manufacturing sector , the 18 variables requested in the OECD questionnaire are broken down by industrial sector and by partner country, and are covered in a somewhat uneven manner among countries. Data in this electronic product relate to the years 1983 onwards and are classified according to ISIC Revision 2 or Revision 3 or both depending on the year.

As regards the services sector , five variables are covered:
- employment
- turnover
- value added
- exports and imports.
The time period covered (1990-onwards) is also more limited than for the manufacturing sector, given that the data collection, using a survey prepared jointly with Eurostat, is more recent.
The publication gives not only basic data but also the share of an industry that is “controlled” by foreign multinationals in each country. To obtain these percentages, the same surveys were used to collect data on the activity of all firms (domestic and foreign) in each country and for each of the variables
available. This has been essential since the data on the “national total” and on multinational firms are not always based on the same statistical unit. While most of the industrial variables correspond to “establishments”, data on multinational firms are collected at a higher level, i.e. “firms”, each of which may include several establishments. This means that the figures for a sector's production or employment, for instance, will differ depending on whether the sectoral data refer to “establishments” or “firms”.
For certain variables, in particular exports or imports, it has not been possible to produce data on the activity of multinational firms and on all of the firms in a country on a comparable basis (firms or establishments). Work is under way in the countries concerned to solve this problem.
All prices are shown in million national currency units.
The CD-ROM also includes a user guide (PDF) and extensive HTML-based methodology notes, definitions and country source information.

Structural and Demographic Business Statistics OECD Online Database
Previously titled: Structural Statistics for Industry and Services
This data set comprises three databases with data from 1995 onwards:
- Structural Statistics for Industry and Services (SSIS) ;
- Business Statistics by Size Class (BSC) ;
- Business Demography Indicators (BD) .
The SSIS database provides information on the following economic variables broken down by 4-digit International Standard of Industrial Classification Revision 3 (ISIC Rev. 3).
- Turnover or gross premiums written
- Production at producers' prices
- Value added at basic prices
- Value added at factor costs
- Gross operating surplus
- Total purchases of goods and services
- Change in stocks of goods and services
- Purchases of energy products
- Gross investment in tangible goods
- Gross investment in land
- Gross investment in existing buildings and structures
- Gross investment in machinery and equipment
- Sales of tangible investment goods
- Net investment in tangible goods
- Employment, number of persons engaged
- Employment, number of employees
- Employment, number of females employees
- Employment, number of employees in full time equivalent units
- Hours worked by employees
- Compensation of labour, all persons engaged
- Compensation of labour, employees
- Wages and salaries, all persons engaged
- Wages and salaries, employees
- Other employers' social contributions, employees
- Number of enterprises
- Number of establishments
The data for the SSIS database have four dimensions: Country, Year, Industry and Variable. An additional dimension Total is shown, which contains one-field only, namely the data and must be selected.
The BSC database provides the same industry level of information as the SSIS database but this is additionally broken down by size classes of businesses. In theory the two datasets are consistent and complementary. In practice however the datasets are considered separately because: the time series for SSIS data are typically longer; the coverage of variables in the SSIS database is more comprehensive than the BSC database; and, for some countries, the two datasets are not entirely consistent, reflecting partly different information sources and allocation methods and partly the different times when the datasets were compiled.
The data for the BSC database have five dimensions: Country, Year, Industry, Size Class and Variable.
The third dataset within the SDBS database contains information of business birth, death and survival rates for many OECD countries and is referred to as the Business Demography ( BD )database. This dataset is at its early stages of development and has not been compiled using the conventional system of
questionnaires, such as those used in collecting SSIS and BSC information, and, so, considerable incomparability problems currently exist in this dataset. The dataset has however been included in the SDBS dataset at this early stage a) because there is considerable policy interest in this type of information and b) because it signals the intention of the OECD Statistics Directorate to collect
information in this important policy area using more conventional methods with harmonised definitions for variables.
Data for four variables are currently available in the BD database – business births (often referred to as business entries); business deaths (often referred to as business exits), 2-year business survival rates and 5-year business survival rates.
The data for the BD database have four dimensions: Country, Year, Industry and Variable.

STAN Bilateral Trade Database (STAN BTD)
shows detailed trade flows by manufacturing industry from one country (or geographical area) to another. For each declaring country, exports of goods to and imports of goods from corresponding partner countries are supplied for the years 1988-2001. The data have been converted from the OECD's product-based International Trade by Commodities Statistics (ITCS) using a standard conversion key and are presented in thousands of US dollars at current prices.
The STAN Industry, R&D and Indicators data sets are presented in a query-based tool, Beyond 2020 for Windows, which allows users to extract and export data, prepare customised graphs and tables and perform simple analyses. All data sets are available as sets of Excel tables, and the complete STAN industry data set is also available in a single ASCII file for simplified loading into local analytical and statistical database systems.
