Chile signs on to be first South American OECD member

Chile will become the OECD’s 31st member and its first in South America under an accession agreement signed today in Santiago by OECD Secretary-General Angel Gurría and Chilean Finance Minister Andrés Velasco. Chile will formally become an OECD member once its parliament ratifies this agreement.

Jobs for Youth: United States says that despite signs of economic recovery, the outlook for young people in the jobs market will remain difficult in the coming years. In the year to November 2009, the youth unemployment rate rose by 8 percentage points to 19%, equivalent to 1.6 million more young people out of work.

Healthcare Reform in the United States
The US Health-care system has many attractive features: in particular, most of the population has access to high standards of medical care. Nevertheless, the overall health status of the US population appears to rank among the lower third of OECD countries, despite much higher health expenditure per capita than in any other country.
This working paper from the OECD Economics Department focuses on two factors that contribute to this discrepancy and suggests two sets of reforms to improve the US healthcare system.
